THE TARGETS WE SET OUR STUDENTS

In every session your child learns the drums in Manchester, we will work towards the following targets, in instrumental technique and general musicianship. We encourage parents to discuss the targets with tutors before, or after sessions.

The criteria are designed to add structure to and support our student’s musical development. They can help identify general areas for improvement in instrumental skill and highlight specific issues raised by the demands of a particular song.

Where a very specific technique is not contained, but with which a student would like to receive support, we encourage discussion with a student’s band tutor.

TARGETS FOR DRUMMERS

  1. Playing a basic rock pattern in time with some simple variation.
    NB at level 1 the musicianship targets have a particular importance and focus for drummers
  2. Anchoring the beat & perform simple fills with help.
    Moving between closed hihat and ride.
    Playing shuffle and rock beats.
  3. Performing a variety of grooves in compound and simple time.
    Performing simple fills and introduce appropriately the crash cymbal without losing time.
    Playing with open and closed hihats.
    Using correct stick positions.
  4. Performing fluently with agility and flexibility.
    Performing complex fills and introduce appropriately all cymbals with a high degree of independence and sophistication.
    Developing a wide vocabulary of rudiments, single stroke, double stroke and triplet patterns.

MUSICIANSHIP TARGETS

When learning to play the drums in Manchester the School Of Rock And Pop uniquely offers the opportunity to develop the discipline of working with other musicians.

Once learned, the skills of being able to make music with others can last a lifetime.
